i am proud to be UN-American

ok before I say anything i would just like to reiterate what I've said in the past. i do not hate "gays". I in no way think that homosexuals are freaks or pure evil or anything of the sort. I simply do not agree that their lifestyle and choices are acceptable. that being said . . .

At the premiere of the televison show Big Love (Big Love is an HBO television drama about a Mormon fundamentalist family in Utah that practices polygamy, for those who didn't know) Tom hanks was speaking to the press (Mr. hanks is one of the producers of the show) when he was quoted as saying. . .

"the truth is a lot of Mormons gave a lot of money to the church to make Prop-8 happen.”

he continues

“There are a lot of people who feel that is un-American and I am one of them,”

and then states

“I do not like to see any discrimination codified on any piece of paper, any of the 50 states in America, but here’s what happens now.”

*sigh* . . . really? . . .

(lets just forget that he was mistaken and that the money wasn't actually given to the church but donated to prop 8 and prop 102 and whatever else funds, and assume that he meant he is against the mormons giving money to such a proposition)

i have typed and deleted over a dozen things now and i just don't know what to say. it seems as thought because I do not agree with the popular/media/Hollywood/whatever view i am so many things. A bigot, a hatemonger, a zealot, a homophob, someone whom desires a theocracy, and now i'm just plain un-american.

honestly there are quite a lot of things i would like to say about that. (only a few will be written because it just seems pointless) i would like to say that the act of expressing ones opinion and voting on an issue seems, to me anyways, to be a great example of a very American principle. Secondly, i do not really have anything against Mr. Hanks, he is entitled to his opinions and his beliefs just as i, but i am really really getting tired of people who possess fame and wealth and then equate that with possessing wisdom. and lastly i have this to say

if standing up for what i believe makes me un-american, then i am un-american

if disagreeing with someone else on moral issues makes me a bigot, then i am a bigot

if defining marriage to be only between a man and a woman makes me a hatemonger, then i am a hatemonger

if trying to live my life in a way that pleases my Heavenly Father makes me a zealot, then i am a zealot

it is getting extremely tiresome putting up with the attitude some people have towards my beliefs. i understand that those who do not agree with my views or beliefs are not ignorant or stupid, on the contrary, many are very intelligent and educated. that being said, why can't i get some of that same respect? why do my beliefs automatically make me into some backwoods hillbilly shooting and spitting at the nearest "critter"/ethnic group/homosexual that should cross my unfortunate path? why vilify me? what purpose does that serve? the only explanation i can fathom is that it is easier to blame someone and make them the bad guy then it is have a civilized debate. but then again i guess a debate is really not even worth it, neither side will ever back down. . .and speaking of never shutting up i really need to stop typing.

one more thing though

while it is not my intent to offend any person with this little rant, i am NOT SORRY if you are in fact offended.

I like reading your blog - it's always very interesting and gets me thinking A LOT too. As I don't pay a ton of attention to stuff - you catch me up on a lot that is said (like the whole Tom Hanks thing...)

I read all about this on the internet, too. What is his deal. Why is is that if you are a household name, you disagree with Mormons. By the way, did you love when Raj said "for shizzo" on last weeks episode?
